Breeding Values

Breeding values are composed of the individual effect of all the genes which are transmitted in the chromosomes from the sperm and egg. By estimating breeding values you are estimating the horse’s potential to transmit genetic merits, good or bad to its progeny.

This has important consequences as selecting horses of a high estimated breeding value maximises the chance to produce a superior offspring, repeating it through generations resulting in a steady improvement of offspring.

To achieve ongoing improvement River Stud selects mares of the highest genetic merits minimising breeding from inferior mares also selecting stallions of the highest calibre to complement the breeding of our mares, therefore our offspring are proving to be superior.

Not only does River stud follow strict breeding values but put the mares through vigorous stud book evaluations ,which start as foals , then again at three years old and again between the age of five and seven years old all mares are graded or hold a valid competition record only then do we breed from them. So we can offer our clients the very highest quality in British Breeding.
