Welcome to River Stud
We are a small mare only stud consisting of six graded mares, we are based in Cornwall, England where we have been breeding successfully for seventeen years and we have developed a reputation for superior quality young stock with world class competition bloodlines.
The core to our studs ethos is that the mares and youngstock are allowed to live as natural life as possible they have no less than eight hours a day turn out, excercise is essential to strengthen young horses limbs, develop tendons and muscles in the correct manner. Foals have intergration with older horses to learn the necessary social skills from the older horses. They receive the very best in veterinary attention and feed. They are vaccinated, wormed and regularly attended by the farrier. As the stud is small they have the attention they deserve, making new experiences fun, the results are happy healthy horses.
The studwork is predominantly carried out by the studs qualified DEFRA AI Technician, who is responsible for the preparation, insemination and gestation period of the mares.
The stud follows strict breeding values and codes of conduct within the stud to enable it to achieve and make essential contributions to the British Breeding industry.
We welcome commissions to our mares, and provide help with exporting horses to South Africa, America and Netherlands.
Breeding Values
Breeding values are composed of the individual effect of all the genes which are transmitted in the chromosomes from the sperm and egg. By estimating breeding values you are estimating the horse's potential to transmit genetic merits, good or bad to its progeny.
This has important consequences as selecting horses of a high estimated breeding value maximises the chance to produce a superior offspring, repeating it through generations resulting in a steady improvement of offspring.
To achieve ongoing improvement River Stud selects mares of the highest genetic merits minimising breeding from inferior mares also selecting stallions of the highest calibre to complement the breeding of our mares, therefore our offspring are proving to be superior.
Not only does River stud follow strict breeding values but put the mares through vigorous stud book evaluations ,which start as foals , then again at three years old and again between the age of five and seven years old all mares are graded or hold a valid competition record only then do we breed from them. So we can offer our clients the very highest quality in British Breeding.
